End of Feature Development Notice
PDS is ceasing development and shipment of the Windows Mobile version of PDS Idler, for ruggedized PDAs, from November 1, 2017. Whilst development and shipment will cease, PDS will continue to support this version of PDS Idler until we complete transitioning existing customers to the iPDS app for iPads.
What does this mean?
Between the announcement and end of development, PDS will not make any feature enhancements to PDS Idler for Windows Mobile, but will continue to make minor bug and security fixes at our discretion.
When development ends on November 1, 2017, PDS will no longer address bugs and minor issues specific to this version of PDS Idler. We will continue to provide product and training support and will upgrade, at no cost, existing licences to the iPDS app until we announce a removal date.
Why is PDS doing this?
PDS Idler for Windows Mobile devices was first released in Q4 2011, it provided technicians with a software tool to capture conveyor idler and structure failures in the field using ruggedized handheld PDAs.
Ruggedized PDAs utilise the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and whilst remains the preferred operating system for these style devices, is no longer supported by Microsoft.
In 2016, Microsoft also announced they wouldn’t be accepting SHA1 security certificates used for data encryption services for PDS Wear for Windows Mobile. This meant PDS had to develop unique encryption techniques for the secure transfer of data to ensure this version of the software continued to work.
Finally, technology has advanced significantly since Q4 2011, today, smart phones and tablet devices are now common place throughout our customer network. To take advantage of these new technologies, PDS has released a tablet based version of PDS in Q1 2017. We will continue our investment in R&D with a proposed released of an iPhone version of PDS in Q4 2017.
What do I need to do?
For those users who have not already transitioned to PDS Idler (for iPads), PDS is providing a free upgrade path from the PDA version to iPad version. iPDS is available as a download from the App Store on iPad devices running iOS 9 and later. Alternatively, PDS can provide (at a cost) managed iPads with the iPDS application pre-installed.
